So I watched the game last night at Farrago's with a private party of sorts and spoke with a guy, Sam, about some cool eateries with some History around here.
Top four spots I got out of the convo:
Thelma's BBQ
Etta's Lounge
The Mink
Leon's Lounge
Thelma's is one of those 'out of a house' places that's apparently quite famous! Sam regailed me with his recent experience of a Rudy's catered event in Austin and said that Thelma's is not quite as good (and you don't even get any 'extra moist' at catered events), but!, considering I judge ALL briskets by the benchmark that is Rudy's, I'm not surprised and would still give Thelma's a shot. That said, Roy Burns BBQ is another 'out of a house' joint that I need to check out.
Etta's is supposed to be yet another 'out of a house' hole in the wall where mama Etta cooks down home soul food at the greatest of ease! The moment Sam said that mama Etta was there, I knew immediately that I had to be there too! He said you are completely slammed with Christian paraphenalia as you walk in the door and everything's just run down enough - true Southern living here - and I can't tell you how much that would say about the food in my mind!
Apparently, the Mink offers 10 dollar bottles of wine on Tuesdays! Pretty good selection too from what I've been told. Pretty laid back joint with mods/hipsters/scenesters/nerds/geeks/professionals, etc, supposedly a good mix and cheap wine. At least worth a look and only a few steps away from Tacos a Go Go if it doesn't look good ;)
Leon's Lounge is supposed to rival La Carafe as the oldest bar in town and just as Warren's, is supposed to be chalk full of locals, run for and by the locals for years and years. A true dive bar in midtown where you can go and have a good conversation and drink...

Sambuca
So for a trendier and flashier spot in downtown for drinks, you can't miss out on Sambuca. I know it's a chain, but it's definitely lively and heavily trafficked. The latin beats from a live band work well with the decor and sets the mood and atmosphere for sure.
Bonnie and Christian (usually Bonnie =P) took care of us all night from behind the bar, and although we had to wait a bit sometimes to refill our glasses, it was quite busy, so it was understandable.
Plenty of eye candy walked through the place (if that's what you're looking for ;) ) and the atmosphere was lively and the energy was high.
Although it was a 'fancier' or 'trendier' joint, I felt perfectly fine in a polo and jeans at the bar, and was never treated any worse for wear either. Lots of the patrons as you would imagine, were business folks coming in after work.
All in all, I'd go back for a drink or two. I'm a bit wary of the 'high end chains' when it comes to the fancy food, but the place was definitely conducive to drinks and mingling.
Not to mention one of the waitresses looked pretty freakin good in her dress that night, couldn't figure out why she wasn't wearing the same uniform the rest of em were... =P

Warren's Inn
Ok, so if you're looking for your own version of 'Cheers' here in Houston, Warren's Inn should be near the top of your list!
This isn't a place for the trendy or flashy for sure. The moment you walk into the bar (that's been there for 20 years now), you notice the cozy atmosphere and quiet background noise! Save for people chatting, there's no loud music blaring and no loud TVs in your face. Filled with locals, you know there's something here that brings people back again and again.
Unfortunately, it seems I went on a slow night and it was pretty sparse, but if you're not looking for mingle about and just want to have a quiet night with friends, this is a good place to start it seems! I will check the place out again on another night just to see for sure.
Let me tell you, what brings people back besides the atmosphere is probably the drinks! Drinks are poured with a deft, if heavy =P, hand and there's a lot of trust given to patrons. It may be a small gesture, but I particularly liked the fact that my bartender did NOT ask for me to pay for the drink until later when I was ready to head out! Didn't ask me if I wanted to start a tab or anything. Very nice.
From what I've been told, the same lady owns both Warren's and La Carafe, so if you're looking for wine or beer in a local historic spot, La Carafe may be the spot for you too!
